The Miami Dolphins went with Brock Osweiler as the backup to quarterback Ryan Tannehill in Sunday’s season opener against the Tennessee Titans at Hard Rock Stadium.

Quarterbacks David Fales and Luke Falk were inactive.

Osweiler, the former Broncos and Texans quarterback, signed with the Dolphins during the offseason with hopes of winning the backup job. Osweiler was presumably trailing Fales in the backup quarterback battle, but may have closed the gap with a strong preseason finale against Atlanta, completing 16-of-25 passes for 147 yards with two touchdowns against the Falcons on Aug. 30.

Osweiler finished the preseason completing 62.1 percent of his passes (41 of 66) with two touchdowns, an interception and a 77.9 passer rating.

Fales, who spent most of last season with the Dolphins, was the first quarterback to crack the preseason rotation. He had a notable 106.2 passer rating outing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 9. But overall, he completed 57.4 percent of his passes (27 of 47) with no touchdowns, three interceptions and a 48.0 passer rating, during the preseason.

The Dolphins signed Falk, a rookie, off waivers after he missed Tennessee’s 53-man roster last week. Falk was one of three quarterbacks, joining Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen, the Dolphins met with before the 2018 NFL draft in April.

Tannehill played in his first regular-season game since suffering knee injuries in Dec. 2016 and Aug. 2017.

Also among the Dolphins starters on offense: RBs Frank Gore and Kenyan Drake, TE Mike Gesicki, WRs Kenny Stills and Danny Amendola, and LT Laremy Tunsil, LG Josh Sitton, C Daniel Kilgore, RG Jesse Davis and RT Ju’Wuan James on the offensive line.

On Miami’s defense: LBs Jerome Baker and Raekwon McMillian made their first career starts alongside Kiko Alonzo. Cameron Wake and Robert Quinn at defensive end, Davon Godchaux and Akeem Spence at defensive tackle, Xavien Howards and Bobby McCain at cornerback, and Reshad Jones and T.J. McDonald were the starting safeties.

Wide receiver DeVante Parker, cornerback Cornell Armstrong, running back Kalen Ballage, offensive tackle Zach Sterup, and tight end Gavin Escobar were also inactive for the Dolphins.

As for the Titans: LB Harold Landry (ankle), LB Rashaan Evans (hamstring), OT Jack Conklin (knee), S Kendrick Lewis (foot); TE Anthony Firkser; OL Aaron Stinnie and WR Cameron Batson were inactive.
